Excellence: ‘Witness’ named finalist for prestigious journalism award

2013-04-03 00:00

THE Witness has been named a finalist in the Frewin, McCall and Joel Mervis awards, which recognises excellence in advertising, printing and production, layout and typography, as well as the balanced use of pictures and graphics in newspapers.

The Witness has been nominated for the McCall trophy, contested by urban dailies with a circulation below 50 000.

The award was won by Business Day last year, with The Witness receiving a commendation.

Up against The Witness this year is sister Media24 paper Volksblad.

The battle for the Frewin trophy, for urban dailies with a circulation above 50 000, will also be an all-Media24 affair between Beeld and Die Burger, while sister titles City Press and Rapport go against the Mail & Guardian for the Joel Mervis award for urban weeklies.

Yesterday’s announcement comes after last week’s news that Witness online editor Kyle Venktess is a finalist in the 2013 Standard Bank Sikuvile Journalism Awards in the multi-platform category, for pioneering the use of augmented reality technology in the paper. — WR.
