Excellent entries

Canterbury Shows held a really good affiliated showjumping show last weekend. With excellent entries, the organisers were able to fill two days of competition. Course builder Gus Oberholster designed excellent courses that rode well and asked plenty of questions.

In the CE/CD classes, The Pieman ridden by Lauren Murphy won both classes with Kirsten Wing and Sanasha’s Makayla second in both events. The CC/CB/CA classes were large and the winner of the Welcome Stakes was Kirsten Cheney riding My Rocket with Tanya Strauss and Dovenby Follow Me second. In the championships Vasti Theron riding Glenbar Diablo was the victor from Kirsten Wing, this time riding Jesse James. The JF/G classes were dominated by the men with Tim Hodgkinson and Waterway winning the Welcome Stakes and Scot McEwan second. These positions were reversed in the championships. The JE/F Welcome Stakes was won by Marian Venniker and Red Hot. Jess Hodgkinson riding Maderia Sunshine was the winner of the championship class. The McHardy brothers cleaned up in the JD/E Welcome Stakes. Devon riding Heat Wave won the Welcome Stakes, while his younger brother Bradley riding Forum Sport came second and this combination also won the championship class. Helen Mathews riding Black Velvet won the JC/D Welcome Stakes with Lizzie Purbrick riding The Slayer winning the championships. Zdenek Muchna riding Foresyte Casa won the JB/JA/Open Welcome Stakes and Grant Langley riding Foresyte Preamble D won the Championship class with Martin Minett riding Western Gold second in both classes.

Following lengthy discussions with chairman of the KwaZulu-Natal Horse Society Sandy Cox, it has been decided to form a midlands committee reporting directly to the KZN executive committee to represent the midlands members. The aims of this committee are to ensure that the midlands members’ views and concerns are heard quickly at executive level; help the many show holders who are wanting to run affiliated shows in the midlands; organise seminars and clinics for riders, judges, show holders and course designers based in the midlands; and generally inject some fun and enjoyment into the sport in the midlands. This decision has been taken not to be in opposition to any other existing committee but rather to enhance the midlands members’ experience of the KZN Horse Society and work alongside the existing committees.
