Exciting Durban Airshow draws estimated 10?000

THOUSANDS of aviation enthusiasts turned out to watch the Durban leg of the KZN Winter Air Tour held at the Virginia Airport on Saturday.

An estimated 10 000 people gathered to view 35 aircraft and 40 pilots perform aerial stunts in one of the best attended air shows in the province. Airshow landside director Justin Scott said, “There were really so many highlights. Having the P51s and the Sea Fury was great, as they are classic war birds and the kids love them. The Durban Airshow could not have happened without an amazing team of people working behind the scenes.”

Scott added that the turn-out was better than expected and indications are that the gate figures were slightly up on last year. “We opened up more space for the crowd this year and that was filled ,” he said.

As with every show, a plane was given away, this year a Piper Cherokee 235 valued at R800 000, as well as a flying course worth R100 000. The next scheduled airshow is the Race of Champions in Ulundi from August 9 to 11.
