Exco: anc tries in vain to block Chetty

2011-06-16 00:00

THE ANC in the Msunduzi Municipality tried its best yesterday to keep its former ward councillor, Mergan Chetty, from becoming an executive committee (Exco) member for the Democratic Alliance, but failed.

At yesterday’s full council meeting the DA presented the names of Chetty and Bill Lambert as their Exco representatives. The ANC turned down Chetty and nominated DA councillor Naleni Atwaru in his place.

Chetty, a former deputy mayor of Msunduzi, left the ANC and joined the DA before municpal elections in May. Atwaru declined the nomination.

Lambert declared that the ANC’s nomination was procedurally incorrect and the DA had a legal prerogative to nominate its own candidates to fill the two Exco seats.

“This move by the ANC to replace Mergan Chetty was extraordinary, quite extraordinary,” he said.
