Exco slashes sponsorship

2014-08-08 00:00

MSUNDUZI’S executive committee is zealously tightening its belt.

The latest to feel the pinch are the organisers of an awards function for women with disabilities.

The organisers had asked for over R300 000 in sponsorship from the mayor’s special projects fund. Exco agreed yesterday that it was a worthy cause, but slashed the sponsorship to R200 000.

Councillor Jabu Ngubo had scrutinised the budget submitted and was alarmed at the cost of the lunch to be served — R180 per person. She said the figures were too high. Ngubo advised that money from the mayor’s special projects budget should go on programmes to empower people. She said it should not all go on sponsoring events.

Mayor Chris Ndlela agreed and said that Exco was not watering down the importance of honouring the disabled. However, he said cuts could be made in the proposed budget. “There is R35 000 set aside for a programme director. We could get somebody to volunteer to carry out that task. Similarly, there could be other cuts,” he said.
