Exhibition of art reflecting on beauty

The exhibition of the final submissions of the 25 emerging artists from KwaZulu-Natal selected for Start: The Nivea Art Award will open at the KZNSA Gallery on July 8 and run until August 2. From these 25 finalists, three winners will be selected and will be awarded prizes ranging from R5 000 to R20 000. The overall winner will also hold a solo exhibition in the KZNSA’s Nivea Gallery next year.

The finalists, partnered with professional local artists who became their mentors, received advice, guidance and support throughout the process. The artwork is required to reflect the theme “Beauty Is…”

The 2008 finalists are Monique Ballam-Smith, Vanessa Black, Lydon Cadle, Claude Chandler, Denise de Sa, Nkosingiphile Dlamini, Barbara Duigan, Kelly Dyer, Natalie Fossey, Gillian Gerhardt, Anelia Gouteva, Lungelo Gumede, Bongumusa Hlongwa, Bheki Khambule, Cally Lotz, Michelle Luffingham, Christopher Mlambo, Musa Ndawonde, Muzikayise Ndlela, Sifiso Ngcobo, Nomsa Ngidi, Siphamandla Nhlangothi, Malibongwe Shangase, Diane van Wyk and Sarah Whitaker. Gerhardt and Fossey are from Pietermaritzburg.

All KwaZulu-Natal artists over the age of 18 years, who have not yet established their careers in the form of prestigious solo exhibitions or previous art awards, were invited to enter the competition. Artists entered by submitting a portfolio comprising photographs of not fewer than three of their existing artworks.
