Expensive Bafana kit is flying off shelves

THE latest Bafana Bafana soccer jerseys are “flying off the shelves”, despite their high price tag, say local sportswear stores that sell the jerseys.

The new official Bafana Bafana kit, officially launched three weeks ago when they played against Jamaica, costs between R350 and R1 400. T-shirts similar to the national team kit are available at a cost of R89.

Numerous sports stores said the high prices for the official kit have not deterred diehard fans from purchasing the jersey. They said they have recorded record sales since the jersey was launched.

One sports store manager said when the jersey first became available, it was sold out within one weekend.

“The jersey arrived on a Friday and by Sunday it was completely sold out and we had to order more stock.

“The public just want the jerseys and they don’t mind how much they cost. We are now waiting for the new one with a Protea emblem, which will cost R1 400.”

Another shop owner said they have also had record sales. “The jerseys are selling very well and a lot of people seem keen on owning the jerseys, so they are not overly concerned about the price.”

Even street vendors trading illegally with fake shirts said they are making a fortune. Said one, “We buy the jerseys in Johannesburg for about R80 and sell them here at about R150.”

Safa CEO Raymond Hack said the huge price tag is a concern, but they cannot comment because that is a matter between manufacturers and distributors.
