Expert to find cause of collapse

2013-10-15 00:00

THE eThekwini municipality has served the owner of the house in Verulam that collapsed, killing a woman, with a notice to appoint an approved competent person to establish the cause of the incident.

The Witness reported last week that Shireen Sayed (50) had just had a cup of tea on her back verandah when she got up to go to the kitchen.

The verandah collapsed, bringing down huge chunks of the kitchen wall it was attached to and trapping her underneath.

She died on the scene. Sayed and her husband, Aslam, had been living for years in their home and were planning to renovate it.

Aslam was not at home when the accident happened.

Deputy head of development management in the municipality’s development planning and environment management unit, Musa Mbhele, said the owner is also expected to recommend long-term and immediate remedial work to make the building safe.

The unit has established that the house was about 60 years old.

“The building was suitably cordoned off so that no people may access the building,” said Mbhele.

He said further investigations would be conducted.
