Explorer’s expedition data stolen from yacht

CAPE TOWN — Explorer Mike Horn has lost four years of data which he had recorded during an expedition of almost 225 000 km around the world.

The world-famous adventurer, who recently mentored the Proteas cricket team during a team-building camp in Switzerland, said yesterday two of his computers and hard drives containing the memories of the expedition were stolen off his yacht while it was moored at the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town last week.

Horn, his family and two crew members were asleep on the boat when the theft happened at about 6 am.

“It is my biggest loss ever — my computer with all the contents. That’s four years of exploration lost. It is very sad, because it is part of history that is lost,” said Horn.

The thief also took a hard drive containing Horn’s back-up data, cellphones, a pair of shoes, a packet of cigarettes and the keys to Horn’s Mercedes-Benz ML.

The computer with the boat’s navigation programme was damaged.

“We have sailed all over the world and have never lost even a single screw, now we come to South Africa and we are cheated,” said Horn.

He was not impressed with the harbour’s security, he said, but admitted his yacht was not locked while they were asleep on board. He said he had heard the thief rustling through their gear, but thought it was the engineer busy making an early cup of coffee.

Annemie Liebenberg, spokesperson for the V&A Waterfront, said the incident was regrettable. She said about 100 security guards were on duty at the Waterfront.
