Express: PMB to Durban train on track

2013-03-01 00:00

THE business express train between Durban and Pietermaritzburg may finally take to the tracks this year.

It was expected to roll in April last year, but the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa) warned that it may not be able to meet the timeframes set by the politicians.

In his state of the province address yesterday, KwaZulu-Natal premier Zweli Mkhize, said that a new customised business express train had been completed at a cost of R60 million.

During the past two months, Metrorail had been doing test runs to determine the running times for the express service.

“Prasa has committed to building three more such trains during the 2013/14 financial year if the first service proves to be a resounding succeess,” he said.

The premier said the provincial government wanted to promote public transport over private car use.

As part of promoting commuter rail transport, the Pietermaritzburg Station would also be upgraded.

This was expected to happen this year after the transfer of the city’s train station from Transnet to Prasa.

Thirty stations are currently being upgraded as part of a station modernisation programme and will cost

R500 million over the next three years.

Because Durban’s Berea Station, is a major Central Business District (CBD) inter-modal hub, it is being upgraded at a cost of R220 million.
