Ezemvelo: Rhino, hippo most popular at premier game auction held in Durban

2013-05-16 00:00

RHINO proved to be the most valuable of the animals auctioned by Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife (EKZNW) yesterday.

EKZNW raised over R13 million during the game auction held in Durban. Rhinos fetched R247 000 per head, with 40 rhino being sold.

Hippo were the second most valuable, with four sold at R35 000 per head.

The Ezemvelo auction is considered a premier game auction, both in terms of quality and diversity of game on offer. The auction is held to create a platform for Ezemvelo to be able to dispose of wildlife that is considered surplus to its own internal translocation requirements.

Musa Mntambo, communications manager at EKZNW, said the auction went very well. “We sold over 1 000 animals, including hippo and giraffe.

In total, we raised about R13,605 million.”

Other animals on offer included the black wildebeest, blue wildebeest, red hartebeest, impala, kudu, nyala, warthog, giraffe, dassies,

zebra, blesbuck and springbuck. The animals are sold to private game reserve owners.

Mntambo said this year’s auction surpassed last year’s. “It attracted many people that that were not there last year. There were many more animals also this year; last year the number of animals sold was reduced because of the foot and mouth disease.”

Mntambo said the auction not only helped raise much needed money, but also helped maintain a good relationship with the local communities.

“The proceeds of five rhino on auction this year will go to various community projects.”
