Ezemvelo to auction white rhino as war on poachers stepped up

2011-09-23 00:00

EZEMVELO KZN Wildlife has announced that it will hold a white rhino auction at iMfolozi Game Reserve on October 1.

EKZNW said in a statement that in addition to raising much needed funds for conservation, the sale of rhino to private land owners has been essential for saving the species from extinction and “remains an important part of its continued survival”.

Meanwhile, Ezemvelo continues to institute a number of measures to curb rhino poaching.

Ezemvelo’s rhino security strategist, Jabulani Ngubane, said measures included the deployment of 39 new field rangers and SANDF patrols at Ndumo and Tembe.

“We also have increased cyber tracking and have a Bantam aircraft to patrol the areas in the reserves.

“We are constantly improving training techniques to counteract worldwide poaching methods. We are busy negotiating to get a helicopter which will be on standby for the operations,” he said.

Ezemvelo will only sell rhino to buyers with valid conservation permits from their provinces and who have demonstrated compliance with all conditions attached to these permits.

The organisation also stressed that it reserves the right to cancel any sale if circumstances surrounding the rhino’s safety or welfare are brought into question.

Buyers applying for an export permit from KZN will have to supply information about the end destination and the purpose of buying the rhino.

Ezemvelo said that so far this year 23 rhino have been poached in its reserves.

The most recent were two white rhinos found shot at Hluhluwe- iMfolozi Park and the two-week old black rhino whose carcass was found at Bumbaneni, Ndumo.
