Ezemvelo to hold game auction

2011-05-27 00:00

IN what is considered to be the world’s premier game auction, KZN Ezemvelo Wildlife (EKZNW) will hold its annual game auction at the Sibaya Casino and Entertainment Kingdom in Durban on Friday next week.

The auction allows Ezemvelo to dispose of wild animals that are considered surplus to its internal trans-location requirements, while raising much needed funds in the process.

It also fulfils an essential role in expanding the habitat of wildlife, as well as diversifying genetic diversity within KwaZulu-Natal.

Last year’s game auction realised R13 502 400.

Among the animals that will be auctioned this year will be 35 white rhino, 84 blesbok, 50 springbuck 101 zebra, 10 giraffe, 16 hippo, 130 impala and 46 kudu.

Maureen Zimu of EKZNW said this year’s auction will be more conservative compared to others years, as the outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease has seen the withdrawal of some of the animals from the auction.

About 200 nyala were withdrawn from the auction in keeping with the stipulations of the Animal Diseases Act, which, in the event of this disease, bars the removal of cloven hoofed animals from foot-and-mouth areas.

Jeff Cooke, head of Ezemvelo’s game capture unit, said they expect a successful sale.

“With the good rains the animals are in excellent condition and they should fetch top prices.”

He said the auction will follow the traditional format, offering both live and catalogued animals.

Twenty-one of the 35 white rhino will be sold live, while the remaining animals listed above will be sold off the catalogue.
