Ezinqolweni: uniforms, guns found

2011-08-31 00:00

OFFICERS from the police tactical response team in Port Shepstone discovered stolen firearms and police uniforms at a residence in Ezinqolweni last Friday.

The police received information from a source and went to a house in the area to find the items.

At first the hunt seemed unsuccessful, but later took a turn for the better when the officers started searching the bushes and surrounding areas of the house.

After moving the search constables Mziwoxolo Chaliza and Siyanqoba Mbhele recovered a .303 rifle, a shotgun, a blue light used by police, and two sets of police uniforms in a chicken coop near the house.

A telescope was found under a bush.

Chaliza and Mbhele then entered the house where they found Khulekani Nzimande (36) and arrested him.

Nzimande appeared in court in Ezinqoleni yesterday charged with possession of unlicensed firearms and stolen property. The case was postponed to September 30 for further investigation.

Constable Russel Sengani of the organised crime unit will be investigating the docket.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid said detectives will look into the possibility that the firearms were stolen from a house in 2009.

“A farmer was robbed in the

Ezinqoleni area and firearms and cash were stolen from the house,” said Wiid.

She said an investigation into the discovered police equipment is also being conducted.
