FA Cup: Middendorp sets the ball rolling

2012-09-13 00:00

THE KwaZulu-Natal Midlands High Schools FA Cup takes place on Sunday at Carter High School and anticipation for the day of non-stop football is building up after Maritzburg United coach Ernst Middendorp conducted the draw for the tournament yesterday.

The format sees eight of the top schools in the region split into two groups and play three round robin matches.

Two teams will then advance from each group to play in the semi-finals, with the final pencilled in for 4 pm.

With games divided into 25-minute halves, the two finalists will have played over 250 minutes of football by the end of the day.

With the tournament taking place for only the second time, defending champions Ixopo have been drawn in Group B alongside last year’s losing finalists, Haythorne High.

St. Charles and Alexandra High round off what is set to be a tightly contested group.

In Group A, a dangerous Maritzburg College outfit will square off against hosts Carter while Linpark and St Nicholas will share the underdog tag.

The winner of the tournament will hold the bragging rights as the best school in the region and receive a fully sponsored kit courtesy of United’s technical sponsor, Umbro.

With three fields being used at a time, there will also be a girls’ competition involving Carter, Linpark, Alexandra and Haythorne.

The first matches kick off at 8 am sharp and members of the public are encouraged to attend.
