FET students’ riots spread to Edendale

2014-05-28 00:00

THE student riots that started at the Plessilaer FET campus yesterday spread to the college’s other campus, the uMgungundlovu FET near Edendale.

Students at this campus locked the gates demanding the management release their examination results.

This comes after students at Plessilaer blocked the gates on Monday with burning tyres protesting the quality of food they were being served.

At Edendale campus, the main gate was locked and students blocked the driveway with a water tank and burnt papers.

Student representative council member Nsikelelo Hadebe told The Witness that the problems started when the students did not receive their results.

“Some students are still waiting for results and they don’t even know if they passed or they must start the following class,” said Hadebe.

Students who did not want to be named said, “I don’t know why they don’t give us our results. Maybe they did not do the marking.”

Meanwhile, the students at Plessilaer campus continued with their protest yesterday and have vowed to continuet until management addresses their concerns. They charged they were being fed food of poor quality and were starving as they only ate twice a day.

Landelihle Mthembu, the president of the SRC at the college, said yesterday, “There were no lectures as the staff had parked their cars outside the gate and the gate had been closed from 11 am.

“We were told that someone from management would address us by 2 pm but no one came; tomorrow the demonstrations will continue.”
