‘FHM’ magazine to cease publication

2014-04-10 00:00

THE local edition of the men’s magazine FHM is to cease publication.

The reasons have not been announced and managing editor Louis Raubenheimer declined to comment yesterday.

“All I can say is that it is sad,” he said, adding that there will be at least one more edition.

Talks about the closure are under way between Media24’s magazine division, FHM editorial staff and Bauer Media UK, the name rights holder.

Former editor Hagen Engler said the closure has been on the cards for some time.

“I am not surprised. FHM’s circulation has been declining for years. It was only a question of time.”

He ascribed the closure partly to digital migration, as well as the growing sophistication of readers.

“Youngsters are very tech savvy and would rather watch videos on YouTube and other platforms,” he said. “It’s just easier than buying a magazine.”

On his blog, Engler described the closure as the end of an era.

“There was a time when FHM was unbeatable. We could get any interview we wanted and went away for luxury weekends at game farms,” he wrote.

“These days, men are different, they dress better, take themselves more seriously and have a greater feminist understanding.”

The magazine has been caught up in scandals over the past few months, including when editorial staff spoke on “corrective rape”.

Not everyone is sad to see FHM go. University of Stellenbosch political scientist Professor Amanda Gouws said there is no place for publications that objectify women and treat them as sex objects.
