FMD: Vryheid in the clear

2011-04-01 00:00

VRYHEID farms are foot-and-mouth negative. This good news was announced by KZN MEC for Agriculture Lydia Johnson at the start of her budget speech yesterday.

Johnson, who was giving the House an update on the outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease in the uMkhanyakude District, said other provinces are lending their support. Over 50 technical staff from other provinces had arrived to offer support during the operation and law enforcement agencies are involved in surveillance and controlling the movement of animals.

Opposition parties blamed the lack of border controls and non-repair of broken fences for the outbreak, saying this resulted in the free flow of infected animals from Mozambique.

Johnson said strain of the virus has not yet been identified and that even an international reference laboratory in the United Kingdom has not been able to isolate the strain from both blood and tissue samples.
