Fabulous Picture Show

2010-11-18 00:00

IF you missed last year’s fantastic Fabulous Picture Show hosted by the Friends of Tatham Art Gallery (Fotag), then you missed out on the chance to own a piece of art by some of the country’s best known artists.

This year’s event is taking place at the Tatham Art Gallery in Chief Albert Luthuli Street (Commercial Road), Pietermaritzburg, from November 23.

An exciting array of artworks will be on display during the gallery’s normal opening hours all week, except on November 23 when the venue will remain open until 7 pm for people to take a closer look at the works that will be going under the hammer on November 26.

Those interested in acquiring artworks are invited to come to place their bids during the week and to pop into the gallery regularly to keep track of the bidding. The grand finale gets underway at 6 pm on November 26 and it is vital that bidders or someone representing them is present to secure the artworks they wish to acquire, as bidding will take place right up to the last minute.

Last year there was much excitement as people placed their bids, especially for works by renowned artists which, in many cases, ended up being sold at bargain prices.

All artworks need to be paid for and taken home on the Friday evening. Credit card facilities will be available.

More than 100 artists have generously donated around 220 artworks for the Fabulous Picture Show and these miniature gems will make ideal and unusual gifts for the festive season. The works on offer include paintings, drawings, etchings, sculpture and ceramics, beadwork, embroidered pictures and appliqué.

All the money raised during this event will be used to purchase new artworks for the Tatham Art Gallery’s permanent collection and with the recent budget constraints imposed by the Msunduzi Council, Fotag’s role as a fundraising and support group for the gallery is more vital than ever before.
