Fabulous gallery fundraiser

2009-11-26 00:00

THANKS to people digging deep into their pockets, the Friends of the Tatham Art Gallery (Fotag) was able to raise R57 150 at its Fabulous Picture Show last week.

After expenses — including framing of all the works on show in the main gallery — the event is expected to put R35 000 to R40 000 into the coffers of the organisation which will be using the money raised to assist the Pietermaritzburg gallery to buy new works for its permanent collection.

All the art on offer was donated by the artists, with the top price of R1 050 being paid by Kirsten Nieser for a Corinna Lemmer original. Other top prices achieved included: R1 000 for a Shan Jacobs; R900 each for two Jinny Heath pieces; R850 for a Terrence King; R850 each for two Hussein Salim drawings; and R750 for a Siyabonga Sikosana original.

One of the most moving stories of the night involved 19-year-old Nomfundo Mahlalela, whose work sold for R700. A student of art teacher Val Maggs, she had to have her arm twisted to put her work up for auction, but was thrilled to see how well it did on the night.
