Facebook: in with the new … or back to the old

2011-09-22 00:00

LIKE? Maybe not.

Facebook has recently made some changes to its interface, but if there you fear the new, worry not — the old familiar Facebook is just a click away.

• Lists: Users can now have separate lists to sort friends, similar to Circles in Google+.

Facebook offers “Smartlists”, which organises friends according to similarities — place of work, where you live, family members, among others.

It also offers lists of close friends and acquaintances, both of which allow for manually including or excluding people.

• Tagging: Previously if tagged in a photo, it would appear on a user’s profile, but not anymore.

Now there is an opportunity to say “yes” or “no” to the tag, to ensure only the most flattering self-portraits appear.

The changed tagging setting also allows for tagging or being tagged by people who are not your friends.

• Subscriptions: A user can subscribe to a person’s posts without being friends with them, a bit like Twitter.

But this only works if those subscribed to set their posts to public.

• Privacy: Facebook allows users to check and control who can see your posts, from a drop-down menu on your profile page.

Posts can be set to friends or public sharing and can be changed after posting, if necesssary.

Make sure posts are set to “friends only” if what is said should not be shared with the cyber public.

• Newsfeeds: This has been altered to make more pertinent news appear in a feed, rather than necessarily in chronological order.

Facebook engineering manager Mark Tonkelowitz said the updated newsfeed acts as a “personal newspaper” selecting the most relevant personalised information.

• No more emails: Users can choose whether they want to receive e-mail updates from Facebook, but the default setting is “no more spam”.

Some users of The Witness Facebook page said they are not impressed by the new interface.

Colette van Loggerenberg advised other users how to revert to the familiar and posted, “Just done mine and I am back to normal!”

Tertia Botes posted “‎@ Colette, thank(s) for sharing.

“I also went back to the old FB.”
