Failed mandate’: national roads Agency to be wound up

2013-04-09 00:00

THE corporation that is responsible for managing and safeguarding the roads of South Africa will be wound up because it has failed to meet its mandate in the past decade.

The shareholders’ committee of the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) last month decided unanimously to dissolve the corporation.

The committee comprises members of the executive committees of the nine provinces and a representative of the South African Municipal Association and is chaired by Ben Martins, Minister of Transport.

Robin Carlisle, MEC for Transport and Public Works in the Western Cape, yesterday confirmed that the shareholders took the decision based on a report entitled Strengthening the Management of Road Traffic: A Review discussion on issues around the RTMC.

He said the purpose of the RTMC was to combine authorities and resources, and eliminate fragmenting responsibilities in all aspects of road traffic management at different levels of government.

Ashref Ismail, RTMC spokesperson, referred media inquiries to the Department of Transport, of which the RTMC is an agency.

Tiyani Rikhotso, spokesperson of the department, earlier told Fin24 that only the cabinet could decide on the future of a state agency.
