Fair and just

2008-09-26 00:00

This week Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife CEO Khulani Mkhize was demoted by a disciplinary tribunal. Under the influence of alcohol he crashed a car he was not authorised to use and failed to report the incident. He has been fined the value of the car and ordered to attend a rehabilitation course.

The verdict is fair and just. Appointees to high-profile positions must accept that their behaviour should be beyond reproach. Currently there is also a laudable attempt to reform the department as a whole after an investigation suggests that a significant number of employees are involved in fraud. The best place to start any clean-up is at the top.

Mkhize has received a salutary sentence. But unlike some in similar circumstances he showed remorse and has been given a chance, suitably demanding, to redeem himself. It is a saga that should set a standard for other public service departments.
