Fair play

In April, Bongi Sithole, former mayor of the uMgungundlovu District Council, was ousted and demoted after a vote of no confidence. She has now resigned from her position as an ordinary councillor.

To anyone who recalls the way in which, under her leadership, the uMgungundlovu District Council woefully failed to fulfil its mandate, this will be good news. However, as opposition council members have stressed, there are many unanswered questions about the misuse of public money on her watch, about questionable property deals and improper donations, and inappropriate appointments.

Does Sithole believe that by absenting herself from the scene of these alleged misdeeds she will evade investigation and prosecution? If so, the council must prove her wrong, pursuing its investigations with unremitting energy and, if the evidence warrants it, seeing that she is brought to court, tried and punished for her crimes.
