Fairy tale ends as Palmer suffers his biggest defeat

2011-10-18 00:00

MARITZBURG United coach Ian Palmer confirmed yesterday that he has never lost a match by a bigger margin than the 7-0 drubbing his side received from PSL log leaders SuperSport United on Friday night.

United entered the match undefeated this season and Palmer had been named PSL coach of the month the day before the trip to Pretoria.

“We couldn’t get out of the starting blocks. The players seemed lethargic and I’m not sure why,” Palmer said. “When you have two players off form, that’s one thing, but when it is the whole side then you’re always going to battle to get a result.”

Palmer conceded his side may have been over-confident after an impressive start to the campaign.

“We are one of the youngest teams in the league and I think that may have contributed to the boys struggling to stay grounded,” he said.

“It is better that this happened now rather than when we are really desperate for a win.”

United face Santos on Friday night in a Telkom Knockout clash at Athlone Stadium, Cape Town. They return to the stadium to face Santos in a PSL match a week later.
