Faithful till death

2011-06-16 00:00

A FARMER in Rietvlei died of shock just 10 minutes of learning of his wife’s death.

The couple, who had enjoyed a loving and healthy marriage of 53 years, will be buried side by side at their Glenrock family farm in Rietvlei this Saturday.

Speaking to The Witness, the family of 75-year-old Hendrik van Zuydam and his wife Lettie said she died peacefully, apparently from a heart attack, at their home on Tuesday morning.

She was also 75 years old.

Van Zuydam and one of his sons rushed to the room responding to the screams of the domestic worker, who discovered the body.

When he realised his wife had died, Van Zuydam collapsed next to her. He is said to have reached for her hand and held it firmly before dying 10 minutes later.

He had a weak heart and is thought to have died of shock.

The couple are survived by four married sons and 10 grandchildren.

One of the sons, Francois, said it was extremely hard for the family to come to terms with losing both parents on the same day.

But he said the family is comforted by the fact that they died together since they would not have coped without one another.

Kotie van Zuydam, a daughter in-law, said the couple were kind-hearted.

“They were well known and well respected.

“They were loved by everybody in the community. The way they treated each other was actually an inspiration to those around them,” she said.

The funeral takes place at 11 am on Saturday. About 600 friends and family are expected to attend. For funeral details, call 033 263 1931.
