Fake-hijack dad reappears in Cape Town hospital

2012-10-23 00:00

LEON van Rensburg (52), who went on the run last week after claiming to have been hijacked the week before, has been found.

In an e-mail, family spokesperson Rob Gardner said that Van Rensburg, from New Germany, was in hospital in Cape Town.

However, he was tight-lipped on the circumstances surrounding Van Rensburg’s reappearance. “… We now consider this matter closed and we will be making no further statements to the press,” said Gardner.

He did not answer his phone when The Witness tried to contact him.

Police spokesperson Captain Thulani Zwane told The Witness police would arrest Van Rensburg in hospital and bring him back to Durban.

How he came to be in Cape Town is a mystery.

Zwane said the investigating officer phoned Van Rensburg’s wife, Shirley Anne, yesterday morning to find out if she had any news of her husband’s whereabouts. He was then told Van Rensburg was in hospital in Cape Town.

Police are considering claiming back the costs the police incurred in searching for him during his faked hijacking. Van Rensburg told the police that he was hijacked at gunpoint by two men in a bakkie, who dropped him at Underberg. His car was found near Kokstad. He had allegedly sent an SMS to his 15-year-old daughter saying, “Help, hijacked”.

When Van Rensburg disappeared last week, Gardner said he had left a note stating serious illness and intentions to commit suicide.
