Fake hijacking: Van Rensburg gets R4?000 bail

2012-10-30 00:00

POLICE have finally arrested Leon van Rensburg, the New Germany man who faked a hijacking and then fled when an arrest warrant was issued for him.

Van Rensburg (52) appeared in the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court yesterday morning and was given R4 000 bail.

His appearance was brief and he was not asked to plead. He faces one count of perjury.

Police allege Van Rensburg made false statements when questioned about his so-called hijacking three weeks ago, which even his family concede was faked.

Van Rensburg had tugged the public’s heartstrings when media reported how his 15-year-old daughter received a text message from her dad claiming he had been snatched.

Two days later he was found safe in Underberg, where it later emerged he had spent the entire time while police were searching for him.

He gave police a seven-page statement, which was allegedly riddled with inconsistencies.

Matters quickly got worse for Van Rensburg when he fled his home two weeks ago as investigators were poised to arrest him.

He surfaced in Cape Town and was admitted to a hospital in the Mother City, where he remained until his family brought him back last week. He was put in another medical facility.

Police bided their time, saying they would only arrest him once he left hospital otherwise they would have to foot his bill.

His arrest took place yesterday morning and with bail unopposed, he was quickly processed through the courts.

Captain Thulani Zwane said Van Rensburg would appear again on December 3.
