Fame and fortunes

MARITZBURG film fans can enjoy four new films this week. The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3, Fame and Imagine That at CineCentre at Liberty Midlands Mall and Orphan at SterKinekor Scottsville.

The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3 is a remake of the 1974 film of the same name, and tells the story of a group of hijackers who take a New York City subway train and its passengers hostage, threatening to kill them if their ransom of $1 million per hostage is not paid in one hour. The film stars Denzel Washington and John Travolta.

The iconic 1980 film, Fame, has been given a modern makeover and it’s going to be interesting to see how it compares with Alan Parker’s Oscar-winning version, which, with its images of students joyously dancing on taxicabs, struck a chord with audiences, spawning a television series, Broadway musical, a world tour, and a reality TV show.

Producer Tom Rosenberg said of the film: “We wanted to follow the characters through four years at the High School for Performing Arts, but we didn’t want to imitate the original — we wanted the characters to be fresh and contemporary. And part of that is examining the nature of talent and hard work versus ‘instant’ celebrity.

“When Alan Parker made the first film, the nature of fame was probably more linked to talent than it is today. Nowadays the idea of becoming a celebrity without talent is more prolific.”

Eddie Murphy’s Imagine That, is the story of Evan Danielson, a financial wizard who, when the promotion of a lifetime is within reach, finds himself torn between his parental responsibilities and staving off his company rival. Then his daughter, Olivia (Yara Shaidi), steps in with rather unusual advice.

Last, but not least, is the film, Orphan, which tells the story of husband and wife who, after losing their baby, adopt a nine-year-old girl, who is not nearly as innocent as she claims to be.
