Family desperate to find missing four-year-old boy

THE past three weeks have been painful for the family of little Siyamthanda Gumede (four), who disappeared from his home in Kwamevana township on January 23.

The last person to see him was a friend barely older than himself, who could only tell police that Siyamthanda went with an “uncle” who promised to buy him sweets.

Yesterday, Siyamthanda’s grandmother Teresa Gumede said it is getting close to a month since the child’s disappearance, and the family are battling to cope with their emotions. “The family is very upset about the situation, especially the mother …”

The boy’s mother Ningi told The Witness her son was playing with one of his friends outside their house at around 11.30 am while she visited her cousin down the road to watch television.

When Ningi was done watching her favourite programme, she went to check on her son.

“When I arrived to check on him, I saw his friend wandering all by himself. And I asked him where Siyamthanda was. He said a man who he claimed to his ‘uncle’ promised him to buy him sweets then took him. Police have looked all over the area and circulated his photo to other police stations since I reported the matter,” she said.

Police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane said the police will continue with their efforts to find the child.
