Family in shock after fire guts home

2014-06-24 00:00

A NORTHDALE family was left with just the clothes on their backs after a fire gutted their one-room home yesterday morning.

The fire burned through the back -room shared by three people, but fortunately did not spread to the main family home which was just a metre away from the fire.

The Msunduzi fire department deployed two fire engines and several firemen to put it out. Except for minor burns to one of the family members, there were no serious injuries.

The room was totally gutted with nothing left to be salvaged. All that remained was smouldering wood and corrugated iron sheets.

Shane Venketsamy, who was in the outbuilding when the fire started, said he only managed to grab one bag of his wife’s belongings as he fled the flames that were quickly spreading.

He shared the outbuilding with his son and wife who had recently moved up to Pietermaritzburg from Cape Town after she found a job here. Almost all her belongings were inside the room and still in bags.

The emotionally distraught Venketsamy said he was unsure what caused the fire. “I had just put on the kettle and it went boom; the flames were spreading very quickly.

“I have lost everything, my clothes, blankets everything; I am left with just the clothes that are on my back.”

He said he had also lost some equipment that he used for his timber business, worth thousands of rands.
