Family massacre: toddler dies

A TODDLER injured in last weekend’s family massacre in Muden became the seventh fatality when he died from his wounds on Thursday.

Tholinhlanhla Fika Mkhize (2) had clung to life since last Saturday when gunmen posing as policemen attacked the family homestead.

Six people died on the spot and three others, including little Tholinhlanhla, were hospitalised.

A 17-year-old boy remains critical in hospital, while a four-year-old was discharged.

On Wednesday police arrested a local headman and another 50-year-old man for the possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.

The headman, Mbhuqeni Zakwe (68), and Muzobongwayo Mfanile Buthelezi (50) appeared in Greytown Magistrate’s Court this week.

“Police arrested two suspects aged 50 and 68. Police seized two shotguns and 21 live rounds of ammunition,” said police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Vincent Mdunge.

Police have not linked them to the massacre. “We will wait for the forensic report on what crimes were committed with these guns,” said Mdunge.

The funeral of the Mkhize family will be held tomorrow at their family home in Muden and delegates from the provincial government are expected to attend.
