Family wanted life for dad killer

THE family of a Pietermaritzburg man who killed his father — allegedly in self-defence — wanted him jailed for at least 25 years.

But the court gave Thabani Ngubane (31) of kwaMnyandu, in the Vulindlela area, only a 15-year jail term after he had pleaded guilty to killing his father Skhwebu Ngubane (68) in October.

On Friday the killer’s mother Ntombifikile Ngubane said they were angry with the sentence passed by the Pietermaritzburg Regional Court, adding her son should have had 10 more years behind bars. She said her son was a troublemaker.

“This was not the first time he fought with his father. Last year he even assaulted me when I was trying to intervene between him and my granddaughter. He was sentenced to six months imprisonment. This time they should have made him feel the pain,” said Ngubane.

The grieving widow said she was now shouldering the burden as her husband took care of the family. “I am very sick; I have arthritis; I can’t even do my domestic work. My husband was helping me with a lot of things,” she said.

In his plea statement, Thabani said the fight with his father began over a gas bottle. He claims his father became enraged and confronted him with a spear.

“I managed to disarm him and shot him. I exceeded the bounds of self-defence. I admit that my actions were intentional, wrongful and unlawful.”

Thabani said he was truly remorseful for his actions and begged the court to show mercy.
