Family’s beach vigil for boy (10)

THE family of a 10-year-old boy, who is still missing after he was swept out to sea on Monday, continued to assemble at the beach in the hopes of finding his body.

It is believed that a strong rip current swept Mbelo Myende out to sea at Pennington Beach, near Scottburgh.

Family spokesperson Lizzy Myende, who is the aunt of the missing child, said, “It has been a very difficult time for the parents and the family. At least if we find his body we can have some closure.”

The family live in Malangeni, near Umzinto, and travel to the beach every day to search for their missing child.

“We come here from early in the morning and leave only when it is dark. Every day we keep hoping that today we will find him.”

The family had been celebrating the new year on the beach when the tragedy struck.

“He wasn’t even in the water. He was standing on the wall of an empty pool when the water just took him away and then he disappeared,” Myende said.

She said the boy’s self-employed parents would continue to visit the beach until his body was found.

“He would have been in grade four this year. He was a wonderful and loving child. They are very emotional right now,” she added.

A police search and rescue team, together with NSRI, searched the beach on Monday and Tuesday.

Lieutenant Colonel Zandra Wiid said rough seas had put an end to the search.

“Search and rescue went back yesterday [on Wednesday] because someone had spotted something in the water. It turned out to be a turtle.”
