Fans prepare to say goodbye to Ashley Callie again

2008-03-18 00:00

Ashley Callie’s fans, friends and family are bracing themselves for a second death as writers put the final touches to the script deciding the fate of Lee Haines, Callie’s onscreen character in popular soapie Isidingo.

Isidingo executive producer Pumla Hopa confirmed shortly after the actress’s death on February 15 that Lee Haines will not be replaced by another actress.

“In honour of Ashley’s memory and her exceptional acting skills, the SABC and the creative team have decided not to recast her role,” she said.

“If we were to recast, the more than four million viewers would be up in arms. Ashley was not only loved by the show’s audiences; we also loved her, so much that we could not give her role away.”

Now the time draws near. According to a Cape Argus interview with Isidingo head writer Grieg Coetzee, Callie’s head-strong character will appear for the last time in early April.

“[Lee] will die tragically, but with dignity,” says Coetzee, who did not elaborate on the storyline.

He added that it is still too early to tell if Callie’s death had an impact on viewer numbers.

But mourning has already begun as fans prepare for her last appearance. According to, fans are dreading the unavoidable tragedy. Says one: “It is so sad that time is running out, it will almost be like losing her all over again. We’re just holding on to the very last moments with her. It really will be the saddest day, her last episode.”

Ashley Callie was born in Johannesburg on May 19, 1973 and died on February 15, 2008.
