Fantasia: 10-day jamboree brings concert, market and Metro FM Djs to city of choice

2008-12-10 00:00

With a pinch of spice and a hint of — well — everything else, Pietermaritzburg Tourism brings you an event that promises to satisfy the tastes of all.

Fantasia, the annual 10-day Christmas jamboree, opens tomorrow at the Alexandra Park at 5 pm and runs to December 21. “Fantasia brings people together in the celebration of the festive season and offers something for the entire family,” said acting events manager for Pietermaritzburg Tourism Heidi Govender.

The flea market, which will be open from 5 pm daily (and from 3 pm on weekends), is a great place for last-minute Christmas shoppers to buy “different and creative products” and will be the venue for some of the country’s biggest live acts.

Its biggest event, a concert in celebration of the Day of Reconciliation (December 16), will feature Metro FM’s Dj Nathi, Big Nas and De Monique — just to name a few.

Other notable events include a bhangra evening and “The Battle of the DJs”, in which 20 Djs will go head to head on the decks for a prize of R5 000.

“There will be a beer tent and entertainment by various artists … and loads more entertainment [daily],” Govender said.

“There is also a kiddie’s hour offering a variety of kiddy shows and not forgetting the fun-fair and quad bike rides.”

The entrance fee to the Fantasia market is R7 for adults. It is free for children under 12.

“There is ample free parking … and loads of fun to be had,” Govender added.
