Fantasia: local woman funds annual festival after Msunduzi pulls out

2010-12-16 00:00

A LOCAL businesswoman has put up the money to stage Fantasia this year after the Msunduzi Municipality pulled out.

Reshma Govender, owner of Shona Trading, told The Witness: “We had two weeks to prepare for this year’s Fantasia. So far I have invested R70 000…”

Fantasia has been on at Alexandra Park for the past five days.

Govender said that when she heard that the cash-strapped municipality would not be funding Fantasia this year, she put in a proposal to host it.

“We have no sponsor. We are just operating it with whatever resources we have available.”

She said the main challenge was getting service providers to offer entertainment such as a funfair and merry-go-rounds. It is also difficult to attract stall-holders.

Govender said: “People complain that there are no jobs, but when opportunities to make money present themselves they do not take them.”

She said she could not bear not to have Fantasia because it has become a popular holiday event.

“We [also] wanted to give small businesses a chance to make some money ahead of the festive season,” said Govender.

Govender said she faces difficulties in advertising the festival because the advertising banners have been defaced or removed.

Today visitors can enjoy Muntu Wabantu, Mzansi, DJ Konga and other music artists.

Msunduzi spokesperson Brian Zuma said the municipality has completely outsourced the running of Fantasia and “those running it have hired the premises from us”.
