Fantasia: no funds for event this year

2010-09-10 00:00

PIETERMARITZBURG residents could forfeit a source of family fun as the Msunduzi Municipality does not have R300 000 to fund the annual Fantasia event, which made a loss last year.

The event takes place just before the festive season.

This was reported in yesterday’s executive committee (Exco) meeting.

The IFP caucus leader in the municipality, councillor Dolo Zondi, said unhappilyy : “The Fantasia is one of the most important events on the city’s social calendar, attracting local as well as people from other cities.”

He blamed the municipality for not allocating funding for this year’s event.

“We recently funded the 2010 BMX World Championship and now that we have to cater for the Fantasia, which is mostly attended by Indians and Africans, there is no budget for it,” said Zondi.

He warned the council to be careful not to be seen to support projects that only accommodate whites.

He said the R300 000 is nothing compared to the greater good that is provided by the Fantasia event.

Msunduzi administrator Johann Mettler said: “The Fantasia is not a priority for the municipality because there are other pressing matters that need urgent attention so that we can succeed in our turnaround strategy.

“We are open to the idea of outsourcing the Fantasia to individuals or businesses because the municipality does not have the financial muscle to fund this year’s event,” he added.
