‘Fantastic goals’ for KZN Inland in 6-1 win over N. West

2013-08-27 00:00

KZN INLAND were full value for their 6-1 win over North West on day two of the BDO Men’s Inter-provincial Hockey Tournament at Hartleyvale in Cape Town yesterday. At the same time, KZN Raiders were made to work hard for a deserved 3-1 victory over Western Province Peninsula.

Inland led 4-1 at half time and their goals in the match went to Gavin Jelley (3), Zamo Cele, captain Justin Domleo and Satchi Reddy, while North West’s goal came from Jardus Smith.

“We scored some fantastic goals, our structure was good and the players made intelligent leads,” said Inland coach Fabian Gregory.

“Once our midfielders and forwards began connecting the results were positive.”

Gregory reserved special praise for Domleo, Cele, Jelley and Devon van der Merwe.

The big question is whether Inland will be able to stay the pace of seven matches in seven days. They have only 14 players instead of the permitted 18 for the tournament.

The late withdrawals due to injury of Lloyd de Kock, Travis Hardnick, Sihle Ntuli, Philip Smerdon, as well as the absence of Kyle Nipper and Matt Redmead have cost Inland dearly.

The province’s Achilles heel is that they don’t have player depth for this level of performance. The first massive test for Inland after two wins in two days (Inland beat Free State 4-1 on Sunday) will be today’s 6 pm clash with South African hockey heavyweights Western Province.

“Province are very methodical, get their outside halves high up in the field and have a full international forward line,” said Gregory.

“With only three rolling substitutes compared to Province’s seven, the big challenge for us is how are we going to manage our players’ legs so that they can last the pace,” the Inland coach pointed out.
