Farm murder: Judgment reserved

2013-02-05 00:00

A FULL bench of three judges yesterday reserved judgment in the appeal of a young gang member sentenced to life for the murder of well-known Kranskop farmer Friedel Redinger in December 1998.

Redinger’s head was blasted with buckshot fired from a handmade 12-bore handgun. He was shot in the back of his head while lying on his stomach after he was held up by a trio of young men.

Appealing against the life sentence, Thembelani Sibiya of Kranskop, aged 20 at the time, pleaded not guilty during the trial saying he did not take part in the murder and robbery of Redinger but admitted that he stole Redinger’s cellphone.

Trial judge Dumi Kondile said that Sibiya placed himself at the scene and admitted that he was with Nkosikhona Gasela when he shot Redinger. The doctrine of common purpose was applicable.
