Farm safety: Campaign launch

2010-10-08 00:00

DEVELOPING effective communication methods between the farmers, their community and the police was recommended by KZN Premier Zweli Mkhize as one of the key strategies that would help reduce farm murders.

Mkhize was speaking during the launch of the Hlasela campaign, an initiative of the Community Safety and Liaison Department that is aimed at encouraging the community to fight crime. It was launched in Mpofana yesterday.

He said there are no proper co-ordinated communication strategies between the farmers and the police “that would make it easier for the police and others to assist when one of them is in trouble”.

Mkhize expressed concern about farmers leaving the province, emphasising the role that agriculture plays in the KZN economy.
