Farmer (80) tied up, robbed in Underberg

2009-04-30 00:00

A group of men tied an 80-year-old farmer's hands and feet together with shoelaces before ransacking his home during the early hours of yesterday morning.

The robbery took place at Cosmos Cottage at Eastern farm in the Underberg area just after midnight. Although no injuries were reported, close family friend Tammy Seagreen said that when she arrived at his house, Albert Barker was in a lot of pain.

"He is an 80-year-old man," she said. "How can you throw a man of that age around like that?"

Seagreen said Barker called her at around 1.30 am, and she immediately went to see him. "He was traumatised. He was in a lot of pain - especially his shoulders because they tied his hands behind his back"

Police said Barker was woken up by noises, and found four men standing next to his bed. Two of them produced knives, while the other two grabbed Barker, tied him up and made him lie on his stomach in his room, while they ransacked the house.

Senior Superintendent Henry Budhram said the men ran away with a Dell laptop, his DStv decoder, a DVD player, his binoculars, a brush cutter, a PC camera and liquor and groceries to the value of about R800. He said Barker managed to free himself and contacted the police. He added that the suspects gained entry through a locked front door. No arrests have yet been made.
