Farmer attacked and robbed

AN elderly farmer had a knife pressed against her throat during a robbery in Mooi River on Friday night.

The victim, Julia Holdcroft (73), who is better known as “Paddy” among her friends and relatives, runs the Carshalton dairy and beef farm in Mooi River.

She had just entered her home office after attending to a sick cow on the farm when she was confronted by a knife-wielding man, who had been waiting for her, at about 5.30 pm.

“This man held the knife against my throat, told me to hand over the guns and said he has been told that I keep lots of them,” she said.

Holdcroft said that after she had cried out “in the name of Jesus” the man gave her the assurance that he had no intention of killing her.

After Holdcroft denied having firearms, the man demanded money, and took R2 000 from her safe.

“He then tied my hands and legs, gagged my mouth and covered my head. I could hear that he was ransacking my office.

“After he had left I managed to untie my feet and went to Heather Gibson, who lives a few metres from my house on the farm, and asked her to untie my hands,” she said.

Holdcroft said she went back into her office where she discovered that the man had taken her digital camera and a cellphone.

The man also took her Toyota bakkie.

“Police found my bakkie overturned on the Hlathikhulu road,” she said.

Koos Marais, security desk manager of the KwaZulu-Natal Agricultural Union, called for greater police visibility in farming areas.

“Farmers and their workers are always vulnerable because they work in rural areas.

“Protecting them is difficult, which is why the police should always be available in their areas,” he said.
