Farmer held over death of suspected poacher

A NORTHERN KZN farmer was arrested last week for the murder of a 65-year-old man who walked through his farm carrying a warthog carcass.

Thomas Samuel Potgieter (45), the owner of Doringbos Farm near Nongoma, was arrested for the murder of Manana Gumbi (65) in a joint police operation between Magudu and Nongoma police members last week.

Police spokesman Superintendent Vincent Mdunge said yesterday that Potgieter allegedly assaulted Gumbi after an argument on November 19 last year. Gumbi suffered serious head and body injuries.

Mdunge said Gumbi was admitted to a local hospital and was later transferred to Inkosi Albert Luthuli Hospital in Durban for specialised treatment.

However, he died on November 29.

According to Mdunge, there is an “assumption that the farm owner suspected poaching since the victim was in possession of a carcass”.

He confirmed that the deceased was not an employee on the farm and was walking along a footpath that runs through Potgieter’s farm.

The Witness also learned that Potgieter allegedly used a blunt object to assault Gumbi, but police could not specify what type of object was actually used.

Potgieter was arrested and charged with murder on Friday last week.

He appeared in the Louwsburg Magistrate’s Court on Monday and was denied bail.

The case was adjourned until today.
