Farmer stabbed to death

2011-09-20 00:00

A YOUNG farmer was stabbed fatally in an attack on his property yesterday afternoon.

Wesley Gordon Woods (30) was at home with his wife when they were accosted by two armed men who forcibly entered their house on Kromrie Farm in kwaDukuza on Sunday evening.

Police spokesperson Colonel Jay Naicker said two suspects allegedly sprayed what may have been mace into the woman’s eyes, but she managed to escape.

Naicker said, “When the woman was sprayed she ran out of the house.

“Her husband remained.

“When she returned she found her husband with a stab wound in his chest and she pressed the alarm panic button.”

Woods died from his injuries.

“No suspects have been arrested, and there is no evidence to confirm the motive for the attack at this stage,” he added.

Naicker said attacks on farms in the kwaDukuza area are not common, but urged people living on large properties to be vigilant about their perimeters.

Koos Marais of Kwanalu’s security desk said there has been an increase in farm attacks over the years in the kwaDukuza area, and the motive has mostly been self-enrichment or robbery.

Marais said, “While we can’t disregard grudges or racism as motives in kwaDukuza, the reality is that robbery is the most common reason for the incidents.”

Marais said that in 2007 there were two farm murders in kwaDukuza and two farm attacks.

In 2008 there were six attacks, in 2009 four, one in 2010 and two this year, including Sunday night’s murder.
