Farmer’s killer gets life sentence

2014-07-22 00:00

LESS than a year ago the tight-knit Mid-Illovo farming community was rocked by the brutal slaying of 69-year-old Mick Hampson.

Hampson was gunned down by two trespassers on their farm in September after he and his son, Murray, were overpowered.

The struggle started had started on the back of Hampson’s double-cab bakkie after they had picked up the trespassers intending to drive back to the farmhouse and report them to the police.

The two robbed Murray of his shotgun and shot his father in the chest.

The bloody murder shook the quiet farming community and was one of a spate of farm attacks, and contributed to the murder rate that had more than doubled.

Hampson’s killer, Siboniso Mtolo, was sentenced to life in prison.
