Farouk Kadodia: ‘bucs given permission to use bester’

MARITZBURG United chairperson Farouk Kadodia has confirmed that he gave Orlando Pirates permission to include Rudolf Bester in their squad for the upcoming Vodacom Challenge, even though the player is still under contract with the KwaZulu-Natal club.

Bester angered Kadodia about two weeks ago when he attended an Orlando Pirates training session in the week that he was expected back in Pietermaritzburg.

After the storm had settled the two clubs began negotiations in what has turned into a long-winded transfer deal. The clubs agreed on a player swap — Pirates defender Michael Morton has joined United — as well as a financial settlement in favour of Maritzburg. The deal has not been finalised though, as Maritzburg are hoping to secure Bucs striker Siphelele Mthembu as part of the player swap.

“In principle we have agreed, but there has been nothing signed yet as we are waiting to see what will happen with Mthembu,” said Kadodia. “But Pirates asked for my permission before including Bester in the squad and we had no problem with that.”

The fact that Mthembu has been included in Pirates’ Vodacom Challenge squad could indicate that he will not be joining United.

Maritzburg played two friendly matches against Lamontville Golden arrows in Chatsworth yesterday in what was the first bit of match practice the squad has seen this season.

Kadodia said coach Ian Palmer was pleased with what he had seen, although his side went down 1-0 in both friendlies.

“The coach was blending some of the regular players with the triallists, so the result was not important,” said Kadodia. “He was pleased with what he saw …”

Kadodia said there was disappointment in the performances of a number of the Namibian and Nigerian triallists who joined the club for yesterday’s matches.

United will face Nation First Division side African Warriors in another pre-season friendly on Saturday in Pietermaritzburg. The match will be closed to members of the public.
