Fatal beating: guard held

2011-03-22 00:00

A SECURITY guard was arrested for murder after allegedly severely beating a man with his baton in the Pietermaritzburg CBD on Sunday afternoon.

Errol Sunjeevan (45) of Bombay Heights — described by his family as a passionate car salesman who was about to start a new job in April after a period of unemployment — died in Northdale Hospital.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Joey Jeevan said Sunjeevan was spotted by the security guard, who cannot be named until his court appearance, while he was allegedly breaking into the premises of Emperors Auto in Langalibalele Street at about 2 pm.

She said Sunjeevan was spotted stealing a tyre from the premises.

“It is further alleged that [Sunjeevan] produced a knife and an altercation occurred and [Sunjeevan] attempted to stab the guard who in turn then produced his company-issued baton and assaulted the man several times on his head and body, seriously wounding him,” said Jeevan.

However, Sunjeevan’s elder sister Shirley (50) said she believes the assault took place later in the evening.

“He left the house at midday yesterday and we are not sure where he was going. At about 8 pm I called to find out where he was.”

“He told me he was on his way back home. That was the last time I heard from him,” said Shirley.

She said the family was informed by police about the incident at about 11 pm, by which time Sunjeevan had died after Northdale Hospital doctors had battled to save his life.

“We are still in shock and cannot believe what we have heard,” said Shirley.

Sunjeevan was a supportive father who spent lots of time with his children, said Shirley.

Neighbours streamed to the family home yesterday to offer condolences.
