2015-03-24 00:00

VOORTREKKER host their 24th annual sports festival on Saturday with rugby, girls’ hockey and netball on the menu.

It’s a grand affair with 19 schools participating — 46 rugby teams, 22 netball sides and 16 hockey squads, meaning players and staff totalling more than 1 400 people will be on and around the school’s sportsfields.

The first whistle blows at 8 am when matches in all the disciplines get underway. On the rugby front, the grand finale is at 3.30 pm when Voortrekker’s 1st team meet Pionier on the main field, while hockey sees the teams divided into four pools of four sides, with the winner of each pool playing a semi-final. The final is at 3 pm.

On the netball court there are three age-group tournaments. The 1st teams are in four pools of four teams with the final at 1.45 pm, while the U16 and U14 teams play a round robin tournament.

Entrance is R10 for adults and school children not in uniform. Pupils in uniform are admitted at no charge.
