With 2014 coming to a close we take the opportunity to reflect on three of the best video games released this year, and three of the video games we can’t wait to get our hands on next year.

Developed in 2009, Minecraft – the game with no objective but to build – was released this year for PS4 and Xbox One. The hit game has been popularised on various platforms include mobile and PC, and also in pop culture with an episode of South Park even being based around the game. Having no point but to use blocks to build, well, whatever you want Minecraft can be a serial time-killer which can now be enjoyed on almost every platform.

Far Cry 4

The highly rated latest release by Ubisoft, Far Cry 4 is a first-person-shooter must for this festive season. On shelves since November this year, the game was released for PS3, PS4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One and follows the main character Ajay Ghale, who heads back to his hometown of Kyrate in the midst of a civil war between rebels and the army of antagonist, Pagan Min. With high quality graphics and an intricate storyline, Far Cry 4 offers hours of entertainment.

Assassin’s Creed: Unity

Always a win among fans of the series, Assassin’s Creed: Unity encompasses all the elements and gameplay users have come to expect from the previous seven instalments of the series. The series which has been said to have taught thousands of kids more about history, than any school class, follows the main protagonist, Arno Dorian with the backdrop set during the French Revolution. Parkour, high leaps, blending in with crowds to avoid being detected and concealed weapons Assassin’s Creed: Unity has it all.

Batman: Arkham Knight

Bruce Wayne returns as Batman in Arkham Knight next year, the follow-up to 2013’s Arkham Origins. This time around, the Dark Knight is off to take on one of his earlier nemeses, the Scarecrow. With promises of new gadgets, improved gameplay and a Batmobile that fetches you from wherever you are, Batman: Arkham Knight might be one of the most anticipated video games for the Xbox One and PS4 next year.

Rise of the Tomb Raider

The world’s most successful human virtual game heroine returns to consoles in the next instalment of the series, Rise of the Tomb Raider. One of the most successful game franchises ever made, Rise of the Tomb Raider is only expected to be released later next year, but a new made-over Lara Croft is always something to look forward to, especially if you fell in love with her 16-bit version in 1996.

Sue me for putting it on this list, but Grand Theft Auto V had to find its way here! GTA V will be available on Microsoft Windows from January next year. In one of the most intricately designed cities ever made for a video game, GTA V can be played forever after completing it. Exploring the map can take as long as exploring a real city, but, with the game now available on Windows, cheat codes, add-ons, mods and general gameplay will definitely become easier.
